What are some of your daily roles and responsibilities at your organization?
I am a senior product manager at Misumi and manage the motion and unit team. They mainly consist of motion products, like actuators, linear guides, conveyors, and other local products used in markets like EVs, semiconductors, and warehouse automation. I also manage the local manufacturing units of all our locally made linear motion and rotary motion products in Dayton, Ohio.
Aside from my everyday work, I also have to ensure that our customers are being taken care of, our website is up to date, and all our departments are helping each other to complete their work. Additionally, I have to ensure that all our products are delivered on time and that there is no issue in claims. We must understand how the industry market works and ensure that our product works for the market and customers.
One of the things that goes a long way for our customers is agile marketing capabilities, and we have moved most of our products to the United States. We deliver our products, like linear shafts, rotor shafts, and posts, to our customers as quickly as possible. To make this possible, I manage the production and work with the local teams in Dayton to ensure that the production is happening on time and that there are no insurance claims.
We follow the quality, cost, and time (QCT) business model, ensuring that our products are of the highest quality, cost[1]effective, and made and delivered within two days of ordering. All our products are configurable, and we don’t sell off[1]the-shelf products. Within two days, the ordered product gets configured, produced, shipped, and delivered to the customer’s door.
What challenges do you observe in the manufacturing space when preventing corrosion in your products?
Since all our products are made locally and are not stored for a long time, we don’t face the challenge of corroded products. Our configurable products don’t sit on the shelf for days at a time. Instead, they are made and produced when an order is placed by the customer.

However, we take necessary precautions too because some of our products are shipped from overseas, but we still have a four-day lead before the products start corroding. We also offer stainless steel and different antirust coating, which helps our customers down the road to prevent further rust. Also, we do a lot of internal testing on the product, like sea salt testing. Through the tests, we found that black oxide has the highest resistance against corrosion since it has a better surface finish on products and better protection while shipped out. Nevertheless, our antirust oil prevents the deterioration of products while they are being shipped to customers, whether through air, boat, or truck
What improvements can be made in the future when it comes to corrosion prevention?
One of the things that can be improved is the prepackaging of the products. The grease from hands, products, or machines could quicken the corrosion process of the product if gloves are not used. However, it’s not only the prepackaging but also the way the product is handled after its received. Many customers don’t know how to manage the product during installation, which also increases the risk of early corrosion. So, there could be more training for customers in the future to show them how to handle the products with care and fragility.
Another thing that can be more advanced in the future is better packaging and protection of the products. If not done well, the packaging can rip during transportation, damaging the product. One of the things that can be done to improve packaging is limiting the number of products inside a box. We can also install multiple protection so products don’t crash into each other and cause ruptures in the fully sealed container, damaging the products and creating faster corrosion to the products once installed.
Can you talk more about the configuration solution of Misumi, the value it provides your customers, and its uniqueness in the manufacturing space?
We have three kinds of customers. The ones who want an off[1]the-shelf product, those who want a configurable component, and those who want a fully customized product. We can serve all these demands, but the one where we truly shine is configuring a part. To configure a component, customers can go to our website, find the product they are looking for, and make the modifications they want on the website. They can download a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) and see if it works on their website or make some alterations if it doesn’t work.
After selecting the required configurable component, the customer will get the time it will take to ship the parts and the price breakdown. They will also get a global part number that will work in any part of the world where there is a Misumi, and they can get the same part, quality, and cost with the number.
What would be your piece of advice to fellow peers and aspiring professionals in the industry?
My piece of advice would be to focus on the growing markets like EV, warehouse automation, semiconductors, and more and understand what and how they are conducting their business. Also, take part in the functioning of your teams to know how they manage production so you can be a better asset to your company.
