The role of the packaging engineer continues to expand beyond the walls of the manufacturing facility. Engineers must also understand the broader forces shaping the industry, including economic uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, sustainability commitments and evolving regulatory requirements.

Extended producer responsibility regulations, for example, continue to emerge across North America with different requirements by state and region. Staying informed about these developments is essential to ensuring packaging solutions remain compliant and commercially viable.

One project illustrates this approach. A seemingly simple packaging material change promised cost savings, but a broader analysis revealed significant implementation costs and product performance risks. The project was redesigned before launch, saving both time and capital.

The future of packaging engineering will require more than technical expertise. Successful engineers will combine engineering fundamentals with financial awareness, strategic thinking and a deep understanding of the business environment.
