Founded in 1927, Miba stepped into the engine bearing business after 1945 and dominated the business.
Miba evolved into a global industry leader through engineering excellence and customer support as well as expansion in size and expertise. The next step was to add the field of turbomachinery bearings to the product portfolio. The company has five Miba Industrial Bearing Sites that manufacture turbomachinery bearings worldwide and three sites in the US, established in 1968 and 1991 respectively. These sites had been a part of John Crane before they were acquired by Miba in 2018, which enabled it to become a notable hydrodynamic bearing manufacturer in the world.
“We aim to advance product precision and efficiency using the wealth of knowledge and experience of our highly skilled teams,” says Cheryl Armitage, site manager, Miba.
As a specialist in the manufacturing, repair, and refurbishment of Babbitt bearings, Miba produces a range of high-quality products including journal and thrust, fixed profile and tilting pad bearings, in addition to labyrinth seals. These products are specifically designed to cater to high-performing rotating equipment such as turbines, compressors, generators, motors, and industrial pumps.
Such equipment regularly incorporates fluid film bearings, a technology that utilizes a thin layer of fluid – typically oil – to create a film between rotating and stationary surfaces. This methodology significantly reduces friction and wear, effectively facilitating the smooth movement of rotating parts within the machinery.
Success stories from Miba’s portfolio highlight its commitment to technical excellence and customer-centricity. For instance, when a customer faced a maintenance problem with bearings failing every two weeks, it designed a bearing that eliminated the need for machine modifications and significantly extended run times. In another instance, it helped a customer deal with temperature issues by providing a design and material that supported the required temperature range, enhancing overall efficiency.
