Beyond Plastic has unveiled the first completely biodegradable plastic bottle cap. The closure is made of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a biopolymer produced through bacterial fermentation. The new, eco-friendly cap looks, feels and performs similarly to traditional petroleum-based plastic caps. Still, it has transformative advantages: it is recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable even in the most sensitive conditions. In contrast to conventional plastics, the Beyond Plastic bottle cap contains no microplastics and has no negative environmental impact.

“Our mission at Beyond Plastic is to create positive change by replacing the overwhelming number of single-use plastics that the world produces with sustainable packaging solutions. Plastic pollution remains a formidable and persistent challenge to our planet. According to one recent study, our oceans contain an estimated 17 million bottle caps worldwide. Adding to the urgency, the University of Newcastle estimates that the average person consumes 250 g of Plastic per year, with microplastics found in newborns, highlighting the pervasive nature of this problem.
PHA shows great promise to solve the plastic crisis, but widespread adoption will necessitate extensive testing and experimentation. Until now, integrating PHA into existing systems has not been an easy task. Adapting conventional equipment for petroleum-based plastics to effectively accommodate PHA adds another complexity.
