Cyanide hardening is a case hardening deviation that involves touching the metal surface with molten cyanide salt.
FREMONT, CA: Technology has gained immensely from steel and other metals. Engineers have worked out how to enhance a range of metals and adapt their properties to the job at hand. Here are some of the heat treating techniques used by metalworkers to guarantee that the metals they manufacture have the properties that customers need.
Carburizing. Carbon is applied to iron-based alloys' surface by heating the metal to temperatures below its melting point (usually between 1,560 and 1,740°F) and exposing it to carbon-rich solids, liquids, or gases. This increases the metal's strength while also making the surface stronger and more abrasion-resistant. However, it reduces the metal's durability. Carburizing is typically performed after the pieces have been assembled.

Cyanide hardening. This is a case hardening deviation that involves touching the metal surface with molten cyanide salt. After that, the component is quenched.
Annealing. Heating and slowly cooling metal (usually steel) to remove stress, soften the metal, refine the structure, or modify its durability.
Drawing (tempering). After hardening, the metal is reheated, then kept at a specific temperature before being quenched. The toughness of the material is improved while the hardness is reduced.
Case hardening. This solidifies an iron alloy's surface by carburizing it first and then quenching it to finish the process, leaving the core comparatively soft. As a consequence, the component is made up of a hardened case covering a softcore.
Decarburization. This requires the removal of carbon from the steel's surface, either through the application of heat or through the natural oxidation process.
Sphereoidizing (anneal). Any method of heating and cooling steel to increase the amount of rounded or globular carbide in the metal is referred to as this. It increases the flexibility of steel by softening it.
Nitriding. This is a hardening procedure in which ammonia gas is used to add nitrogen to the metal surface. It triggers case hardening without the need for quenching.
Precipitation hardening. This is a form of hardening (also known as age hardening) in which some metals are held at high temperatures without being quenched. Most structural alloys of aluminum, magnesium, nickel, titanium, and some stainless steels have improved yield strength due to this process. It can increase high-temperature strength in superalloys.
Quenching. Steel is quickly cooled by submerging it in oil or water, which hardens its structure.
Cold working. It is used to alter the characteristics of metal and is not a heat-treating operation. This is achieved by deforming the metal without shattering it at room temperature. This shifts the form of the metal, giving it more tensile strength and machinability.
