Unlike standard injection molding services, which primarily produce solid items, blow molding utilizes pressurized air.
The process involves several steps. Initially, an extruder machine shapes softened, molten plastic into the form of a tube. Subsequently, a hole is made in one end of the tube to facilitate the passage of compressed air. This heated plastic tube is referred to as a parison. Finally, the desired hollow shape is achieved by directing compressed air to push the plastic outwards while the parison is held in place inside the mold. Once solidified, the part is removed from the mold and allowed to cool.

Types of Blow Molding Techniques:

Extrusion Blow Molding:
This technique is ideal for creating intricate product shapes. In this process, plastic is heated and extruded into a hollow tube (parison). Compressed air is then blown into the heated plastic, causing the parison to take on the desired shape. Once cooled, the product is ejected. Extrusion blow molding can be performed continuously or intermittently.
Injection Blow Molding:
During this technique, plastic or polymer is filled into a core pin, and the blow molding machine rotates the pin until the plastic inflates into the desired shape. Subsequently, it is rapidly cooled and released. This method is less commonly used as it requires more time compared to the other two techniques.
Injection Stretch Blow Molding:
An alternative to injection blow molding that utilizes less material is injection stretch blow molding. This process involves molding plastic into a solid preform, which is then heated and fed into a stretch blow mold machine. The preform is heated again and then forced into a mold cavity filled with pressurized air. This technique is commonly employed for producing bottles for soft drinks.
