Foundries melt metals in special furnaces and pour the molten metal into molds to compose products. There are different types of foundries for different types of metals, such as iron foundries, brass foundries, bronze foundries, etc.
In addition to iron, steel, copper, aluminum, bronze, and other alloys, casting is also produced in other metals. A foundry usually specializes in one or more types of metal. Gravity dies casting is the process of pouring molten metal into sand molds.
Another casting method is pressure and gravity die casting, as well as centrifugal die casting. Molded metal is used in die casting to make pipes and other items. A rotating mold causes the liquid metal to spread over the profile of the mold as it runs into it.
Foundry sand types: Listed below are the different types of foundry sand and their uses:
Green Foundry Sand: The following conditions must be met by these types of foundry sand:
In order to keep the molded shape while moist, it must have a good green bond.
Refractory, i.e., heat-resistant
In order to prevent scabbing on the casing surfaces, they must not contain impurities.
The bonding quality of such sand will depend on the presence of some type of clay material (bonding agent to soil grains). As found natural molding sands are suitable, while synthetic sands are sharp sands that are mixed with clay materials.
Core Foundry Sand: Core sand is specially selected sand used for making cores of all shapes, which are used inside molds to form holes or recesses in castings. Sands used in cores must possess the following characteristics:
• Bonds that are green
• After drying completely, a dry bond retains its shape
• Gases must pass rapidly through, i.e., they must be permeable.
• In order to remove the core easily, it must collapse readily after casting.
Silica Sand: In making an oil sand core, silica sands are combined with dextrin and water to create a green bond. Adding linseed oil to the core does not create a green bond, but when it is baked, it oxides and forms a dry bond, leaving the sand permeable and not so firmly bonded that it won't give a little pressure as the casting cools or that it will be difficult to remove.
