Fremont, CA: Warehouses use a wide range of material handling equipment, from the most basic shelf to the most sophisticated lights-out facilities (warehouse automation that can work in the dark). It's difficult to recall all of them, but they fall into four general categories.

The Handling of Equipment
This is the most common kind, something so plain that one may not even think of it as equipment. These are the shelves and racks where one keeps the stuff before obtaining it and shipping it. They are frequently built to make use of vertical space so that the warehouse can accommodate more objects. This category also includes bins, drawers, stacking frames, flow racks, cantilever racks, and mezzanines.
Engineered Systems
This form of material handling equipment entails more complex systems with multiple components, which are typically automated.
AGVs, conveyor belt or robotic distribution systems (complicated systems that come in a variety of shapes and sizes), or Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS), which are automated systems that also incorporate AGVs and make warehouses more efficient—basically, anything that pushes materials around the warehouse so employees don't have to.
This is the most complex and costly category of equipment, often integrating elements from the other categories into larger, more expansive structures. Before making an investment in one of these systems, it is necessary to spend a significant amount of time and research.
