Fremont, CA: Lost-wax casting, also called investment casting or precision casting, is a manufacturing process in which a wax pattern is used to shape a disposable ceramic mold. Casting is done by making a wax pattern in the exact shape of the item. The pattern is then coated with refractory ceramic material. After the ceramic material has hardened, it is turned upside down and heated until the wax melts and drains out. It then becomes an expendable investment mold. After the metal has cooled, it is poured inside. When the metal has cooled, it is broken out of the spent mold.

• Metal die construction
Because the wax pattern and ceramic mold are destroyed even during the investment casting process, each casting necessitates the creation of a new wax pattern. Therefore, unless investment casting gets utilized to generate a very tiny volume (as is usual for artistic work or unique jewelry), a mold or die from which the wax patterns are manufactured is required.

• Wax pattern production

• Shakeout
The ceramic molds degrade as the casting solidifies, allowing the casting to get removed. Typically, the ceramic mold is broken apart manually or with water jets. Individual castings are detached from their gating system tree by human impact, sawing, cutting, burning, or cold breaking with liquid nitrogen after being removed.
• Finishing
Grinding and sandblasting are standard finishing processes that smooth the component at the gates and eliminate flaws. Based on the metal from which the casting got poured, heat treatment may be helpful to harden the finished product.
