The use of biodegradable plastics reduces carbon dioxide emissions: There is more waste plastic produced today than ever before in human history. We are finding these items in our oceans and even in our drinking water. Polycarbonates that do not require petrochemicals or their CO2 emissions for refinement have been created by researchers at the University of Bath using only sugar and carbon dioxide. This type of plastic breaks down naturally, depositing only the amount of gas used to create it back into the environment.
The use of biodegradable plastics can reduce greenhouse gas emissions: The use of biodegradable plastics instead of items made through traditional refinement processes results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Over 100 million tons of plastic are consumed each year, which means that this industry creates 500 million tons of carbon dioxide that enters our atmosphere every year based on the standard production ratio of 5:1. Nineteen million vehicles emit the same amount of emissions every year.
Net carbon savings alone would sum up to 30 percent if we recycled our plastics annually, and some researchers suggest that the savings could be as high as 80 percent. As a result of switching to biodegradable plastics, the industry would be able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions even further, despite the initial financial costs.
Natural bacteria break down biodegradable plastics: The carbon in traditional products will be retained after plastics are formed. When individuals dispose of them and they decompose, that gas is released into the atmosphere. Because biodegradable plastics don't always require CO2 during manufacturing, this greenhouse gas release may never occur during decomposition. Bacteria in the soil consume the components as they break down in the environment. By managing waste more efficiently, individuals reduce the potential for pollution in every biome.
We produce less waste when we use biodegradable plastics: Approximately 13 percent of our current waste stream is plastic. Approximately 32 million tons of waste are generated each year, with only 9% recycled. In landfills and other waste disposal programs, most of the remaining waste could take up more than a century of space. We can experience a complete breakdown of biodegradable plastics in 18-36 months when facilities have the proper composting equipment.
We would still be able to reduce the amount of space needed to dispose of the materials even if a complete breakdown does not occur. As a result, the overall waste stream would be less stressed.
