Bioplastics make up between 1 percent and 3 percent of all plastics worldwide. From 2021 to 2026, the market will grow by more than 20 percent per year. With this steady growth of more than 10 percent, bioplastics could make up as much as 40 percent of the global plastics market by 2030. Bioplastics are better than regular plastics in more ways than just making the world less dependent on fossil fuels. For example, firms can use a variety of feedstocks when they use resources that are renewable or biodegradable. This makes them more resistant to problems in the supply chain and price increases. Compared to crude oil, some natural fibers are cheap, easy to find, and don't make toxic waste when processed.
Standard polymers can be heavier than bioplastics. This is especially helpful for the car and plane industries, where "lightweight" is becoming more and more important to save fuel. Using more materials from plants and animals helps keep trash out of landfills. Recycling and composting are also ways to deal with waste.
Even though the situation is not simple, bioplastics are excellent and traditional plastics are harmful. Researchers worldwide are searching for other renewable feedstocks to solve these problems. Algae grow in water instead of on land, and trees, straw, and cotton are good sources of cellulose. But the biggest problem might not be at the start of a person's life but the end.
Plastic is a good material for many things because it is lightweight, durable, transparent, water-resistant, and easy to clean. This makes it almost impossible to stop using it everywhere.
Bioplastics and other alternatives like them are very important. But it will take time to make enough of it at the right price and volume to be widely used.
Still, the growing demand for electronics, drugs, and transportation suggests that the bioplastics industry will grow quickly in the coming years. Putting in place rules to reduce the production and use of plastic products should also help the bioplastics market and research and development. Because of these things, bioplastics are probably not going to be a trend.
