A new way of thinking is taking root in the manufacturing industry; how do we transform existing processes to improve productivity and enhance the end-customer experience? How do we align our strategies with global manufacturing sustainability goals?

Foresighted companies are moving away from traditional approaches and embracing customer-centric and sustainability-aligned workflows. SLM Solutions—an originator of selective laser melting (SLM) technology—is one such company.

Pioneer in metal additive manufacturing, SLM Solutions is constantly goaded by the innovative DNA inscribed in its philosophy. It focuses on developing, assembling, and selling machines and integrated system solutions for various aerospace, energy, healthcare, and automotive manufacturing clients.

“Our focus is developing and distributing the most innovative, production-oriented metal additive manufacturing systems. We strive to change the future of manufacturing through product performance and innovation and for our customers to benefit from that approach,” says Sam O’Leary, CEO of SLM Solutions.

SLM Solutions designs its portfolio machines on four pillars: productivity, open architecture, reliability, and safety. These core competencies
enable its products to be highly reliable with a solid value proposition, making the client manufacturing process precise and easy.

Leading in metal additive manufacturing, SLM Solutions invests heavily in solving and translating mass manufacturing and its scale. This enables it to provide various machines catering to the diverse needs of manufacturers across the sector. Its latest machine, the NXG Xll 600, is a revolution in industrial manufacturing. It is 20 times faster than a standard single-laser system and up to five times faster than a four-laser machine. The 12 lasers, each 1000 watts, are optimized for high-volume production of large parts, making it a welcome addition to some of the best innovations in the additive manufacturing arena. The machine is raising the industry bar to new heights by increasing productivity and reducing cost-per-part with Double Jump Speed, enabling build rates of 1000ccm/h. The open architecture system allows customers to get the best out of the machines, add more features, and innovate the technology. The end-to-end solution provider never restricts the software and raw materials customers use.
Separating SLM Solutions is its collaborative method of developing the machine.

“We innovate based on our rich customer interaction, through which we understand the client’s production needs. We can translate those needs into products, solutions, and services that allow our customers to change the future of manufacturing because we provide the capability,” says Emily DeSimone, director of global marketing and communications of SLM Solutions.

This allows SLM Solutions’ customers, regardless of industry, to meet their manufacturing needs and even exceed them.

The capabilities of SLM Solutions came to the fore when it facilitated the 3D printing of the Bugatti Active Heat Shield to the engine’s electric pump in the Bugatti Chiron. The product needed a precise layer thickness of 60 micrometers and the application of Aluminum AlSi10Mg. SLM Solutions used the SLM 280 Twin machine to manufacture the product. The complex geometry was produced at lower costs than with traditional methods. This part provides integrated water-cooling channels that help protect the engine’s electric pump from heat. The system has been installed in every Bugatti Chiron since the first vehicle was delivered from the Molsheim factory.
